A time in Surabaya

sunny

These past few days have been tiring and yet exciting and very inspiring. Today we have reached Surabaya, a city located on East Java. This particular city acts as a main seaport and commercial center making it the second largest city in Indonesia after Jakarta.

When first travelling in Surabaya we were surprised to find that the city is highly urbanized and has many shopping centers that you can visit. Since we already been to Plaza Senayan back in Jakarta we all agreed to do something fun and memorable. Today we are going to check out their downtown core, since being a metropolitan city. We have had some friends who have been here before and recommended a great little 3 floor souvenir shop, Mirota. This particular shop contains small items (Key Chains, magnets), Batik (Traditional Clothing), Arts (Wood Sculptures, coins/ stamps).
We all ended up getting something. Lacey bought a couple key chains to bring back to family and friends, Laura wanted something authentic so she walked away with a traditional dress as for me, Leslie I wanted something I could have in my house so I was encouraged by the locals to buy a wooden sculpture.

When speaking about the Batik, traditional clothing and customs are very important in Indonesia. Indonesian religion plays a major role, 86% are Muslims. Every person is free to choose and practice the religion of their choice. “Belief in the one and only God”

  • Travel Tip: Observe Muslim customs, especially female clothing while in public establishments*
